When to See a Doctor About Trying to Conceive

Guides. Updated . Calculated with the standard pregnancy dating method used by ACOG and the NHS.

Most couples conceive within a year of trying, but there are good reasons not to wait that long in some situations.

General guidance

Common guidance is to see a doctor after 12 months of trying if the woman is under 35, after 6 months if she is 35 or older, and sooner if she is over 40.

Reasons to go sooner

Very irregular or absent periods, known endometriosis or PCOS, previous pelvic infections, two or more miscarriages, or known fertility problems in either partner are all reasons to seek advice early.

What to bring

A record of your cycles and any ovulation tracking helps your doctor understand what's happening.
