The Fertile Window Explained

Guides. Updated . Calculated with the standard pregnancy dating method used by ACOG and the NHS.

The fertile window is the stretch of days in each cycle when sex can lead to pregnancy. It is about six days long: the five days before ovulation and ovulation day itself.

Why six days?

Sperm can survive for up to five days in the reproductive tract, while an egg lasts about 12 to 24 hours after release. The window is the period when the two can meet.

When are the best days?

Pregnancy rates are highest when sex happens in the one or two days before ovulation, and on the day itself.

Finding your window

For a regular cycle, subtract 14 from your cycle length to estimate ovulation day, then count back five days. Ovulation tests and cervical mucus help you fine-tune it.
